Continuing Education Series Workshops
Unearth the ancient world of the dinosaurs, challenge the principles of physics, get sun smart and learn new tips and techniques for teaching science in your classroom. The Maryland Science Center is filled with innovative new educational opportunities for educators and students. Explore activities and new insights into creative exhibit floor exploration for students. Workshops include stipends!
Antarctica Educator Workshop
Saturday, November 13, 2010
9am–3pm
Registration is not yet open for this workshop, please check back.
-
Spend a day examining the remote continent of Antarctica.
-
Explore the important science carried out there and how scientists study the continent to better understand the history of Earth and how our planet’s climate is changing.
- The workshop includes a presentation from a researcher who has worked in Antarctica and time to explore our Polar Fair, where you will meet scientists and educators who have and worked on the icy continent.
The workshop will include:
- A screening of the IMAX film Antarctica.
- Polar-related resources for your classroom.
- Demonstrations of classroom activities created for the NSF/NASA-funded Polar Palooza program.
- Lunch and a $100 stipend for each participating teacher.

Cyclones, Currents and Climate Educator Workshop
Saturday, February 26, 2011
9am–3pm
Registration is not yet open for this workshop, please check back.
-
Discover the vital connection between our planet’s ocean, atmosphere and land.
-
Explore how ocean surface currents and deep ocean currents circulate around the planet bringing warm weather to places that would otherwise be much colder, a critical factor in our planet’s climate.
- And learn how tropical cyclones, known locally as hurricanes, form and propagate.
The workshop will include:
- A presentation from a scientist from NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration).
- Demonstrations of hands-on activities for your classroom, the IMAX film Hurricane on the Bayou.
- Presentations of new weather and climate programs on Science On a Sphere.
- Lunch and a $100 stipend for each participating teacher.

Other Worlds, Other Life Educator Workshop
Saturday, April 2, 2011
9am–3pm
Registration is not yet open for this workshop, please check back.
- Discover the latest findings in our quest for life beyond Earth.
- What are the possibilities for life on other worlds in our solar system?
- How do extreme forms of life here on Earth help us understand environments where life could arise?
- What is the status of our search for other worlds beyond the solar system?
The workshop will include:
- Presentations from researchers working in the field of astrobiology
- Activities for the classroom
- Lunch and a $100 stipend for each participating teacher.
- The Maryland Science Center is embarking upon the development of an exhibit and a Davis Planetarium program on the topic of life on other worlds and look forward to your input as part of this workshop.
