MARYLAND SCIENCE CENTER OFFERS "BIG, GORSS SUMMER"
Big IMAX films and gross animals highlight summer activities

The Maryland Science Center wants this to be the biggest, grossest summer ever, and it has added a variety of enormous IMAX films and disgusting animal exhibitions to its summer lineup to ensure that it will be.

Narrated by Academy Award-winner Michael Douglas, the new film Dinosaurs Alive! 3D follows the expedition of two paleontologists from excavation sites in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia to the Ghost Ranch digs of New Mexico as they research dinosaurs and make incredible discoveries about how these colossal creatures lived. Paleontologists discover fossils of two dinosaurs still gripping each other in combat, and then use state-of-the-art technology to recreate the dinosaurs' ferocious battle in a realistic--and life sized!--3D experience on the five-story IMAX screen.

Hurricane on the Bayou uses computer generates effects to show the formation of Hurricane Katrina, the arrival of the storm, and the impact the hurricane had on the area, all emphasized to new heights by the enormity of the IMAX screen. Never-before-seen footage filmed in the direct aftermath of the storm shows the devastating toll Katrina took on the city, while exploration into the disappearing Louisiana wetlands helps explain how the storm became so severe. Hurricane on the Bayou takes viewers from before the storm through to footage of the 2006 Mardi Gras, a triumphant yet bittersweet celebration of the city's resilience and strength.

Whales explores in enormous size the habitats and lives of Humpback, Right, Blue, and Orca whales. The film follows Echo and Misty, a mother whale and her newborn, as they navigate the treacherous and often unforgiving depths of the world's oceans as part of their yearly migration.

Following the record-setting success of Grossology, the Maryland Science Center will get even grosser this summer. Through Labor Day Animal Grossology will explore all the nasty, stinky, disgusting science of animals' bodies.

Animal Grossology guides visitors' instinctive interest in all things gross to show the incredible process going on in animals' bodies. Hands-on activities and clever animatronics explain why cows are one of the gassiest animals on Earth, how blood-sucking leeches and snails are used in medicine, and exactly how the dung beetle got its name. Visitors will learn about animals in a uniquely gross and exciting way through life like models and games such as "Party Pooper," where participants follow clues to correctly identify which doo-doo belongs to each animal. The "Belch-A-Baby" pinball arcade game illustrates how some frogs actually give birth by "belching" out their babies. In "Dung Ball Rally," visitors become scarab beetles in an interactive video as they compete against others to push a giant dung ball into a nest.

Summer also means the return of Backyard Science Days at the Maryland Science Center Saturday August 11 and Sunday August 12, 2007, and the always "Bat Encounter" with bat experts Rob Mies and Kim Williams. Bat Encounter introduces the science of big, gross bats - some with wingspans over six feet!--and secrets of bat's nocturnal behavior. A special device called the "bat detector" lets the audience hear a live bat's echolocation throughout the show.

Backyard Science Days is free with paid admission to the Maryland Science center. IMAX films and animal Grossology require and additional ticket. The Maryland Science center is located at 601 Light Street at Baltimore's Inner Harbor.
