What is Solstice?
Solstice is the Maryland Science Center’s annual fundraising event that takes place on the Saturday closest to the Summer Solstice—the first day of summer. Funds raised from Solstice support the programs and outreach efforts of the Science Center as well as help underwrite free admission for all Maryland schoolchildren throughout the academic year when visiting on field trips.
Why We Need Your Support
Our children have a remarkable resource in the Maryland Science Center—a place where exploring the world of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) happens with an emphasis on learning by doing. Taking children beyond the classroom and immersing them in a please-touch environment that applauds experimenting, wondering, and working together gives students a unique perspective on the importance of science in our everyday lives.
Children who visit the Maryland Science Center see the endless possibilities through science in action in dynamic exhibit halls, theater experiences and live science shows. Exposing our children to alternate ways to look at the universe, look at ourselves, and look at the world around us opens their horizons and sparks a sense of excitement about the learning process. Your support ensures that the Maryland Science Center remains at the forefront of informal science education and helps lead our children into the next century of innovation.
How Your Support Helps
Supporting Solstice supports the Maryland Science Center. The Science Center is a private 501(c)3 non-profit that relies on fundraisers, donations, and other revenue to meet its operating budget.
Reaching over 200,000 Maryland students through a combination of field trip visits, traveling science program visits to Maryland schools, workshops, and after school programs, the Maryland Science Center’s unique brand of hands-on experiential learning can only thrive with adequate resources.
Support for Solstice also helps underwrite the cost for teacher workshops where teachers learn how to translate the Maryland Science Center’s education tools back into the classroom to extend the learning experience. And support for Solstice helps the Science Center reach into the community to expose underserved audiences to the importance of early childhood education and be a resource for families who want their children to see the possibilities that science can offer.
